Make Your Own Background

Make Your Own Background
is our latest challenge at Fashionable Stamping Challenges.

I had some serious fun with this one!
Shirley (industrious leader at FSC) and I had a rare Skype-crafting session where we just played and got messy.  Good ol' fashioned fun.
And this canvas is the result.  My first one!
You can see Shirl's project here.

It is so funny when people are creating together and then what they come up with are poles apart.
We all see this when we do classes or workshops.  And this is exactly what happened this time.
Thanks Shirl...it was so much fun!  It just goes to show that you can work around time zones...that anything is possible if you want it to be.  I can't wait to do it again.

Inspiration for this is from a recent day of workshops with Finnibair who is on tour in Australia and New Zealand at the moment.
Luckily she was touring within a few hours of where I live and couldn't resist the opportunity to go and play.

My canvas has lots of layers in the background, and even more on the top.
Finally the idea of layers is starting to make sense to me...lol.

The background has dimension from modeling paste, ribbon, paper and hessian.
And the top is just anything I could lay my hands on really.
Maybe I went a little over-board with the shimmer spray...well, why not!  It was sooo much fun!!!

It isn't a work of art, more like a 'work-of-fun'.
All in all, I am more than happy with how my early attempts at working on a canvas has gone and I am keen to give it a go again real soon...especially as I am now on Summer holidays!
I love this stamp set and am keen to experiment some more with it.

The stamps were bought on the day and worked beautifully on this canvas.
They were stamped onto tissue paper and then placed where I thought they should go.

I have learnt that canvas's aren't that scary after all (most of the time).

The girls at FSC have come up with some inspiring and very different versions on the theme this time.
Please pop on over and check out the awesomeness of their creativity,
be inspired, and maybe join in our fun.
Flonzcraft are our sponsors this fortnight and have a generous $20 gift voucher up for grabs,
there are spotlights and a top 3 as well.

Stamping must be the focal point on your project!

Enjoy!

A Little Over Emotional...

I thought I would share a canvas that I did at a Finnibair workshop recently.
We were so fortunate to have her touring Australia and New Zealand...
and I was even luckier when she came within travelling distance for me to attend.
So I went for the day.

This is a double canvas that we did in the morning session,
called 'Over Emotional"
I need to add some pics to the one from the afternoon session, so I will post that too when it is done.

When I look back at this I see where I lacked a little confidence.
I would definitely do it all again...
it was heaps of fun and something I will remember for a very long time.

Finnibair has such a creative mind, it was a great experience.

I would highly recommend that if you are thinking of going along to a workshop...
and you are umming-and-arrring...
just do it!
You sure wont regret it.

One day I will invest in an apron!

 concentrating hard!

A LIttle Scrappin'

Having a go at Scrappin' again!

I am continuing my scrapping journey, ever so slowly...

This time I have gone over the border and enjoyed another session with Fiona Paltridge.
As soon as she said she was doing a grunge page I just couldn't resist!

I don't know about you, but there is just something so relaxing and enjoyable about going to someone else's workshop...you can just get messy and enjoy it!

Anyway, here is what I made.
I did take it home and add a little of something that I learnt from the Andy Skinner's Book of Ruinations on-line class...and the whole page just 'popped' .

This picture of me was taken when I was about 1 year old in my nana's front garden.
My nana had the best garden for kids to play in. It was so overgrown with lots of hiding places, things to explore and flowers to pick...and we picked heaps of them all the time.

The Indigoblu butterflies on this page where sprayed with lots of different sprays out on Fiona's front lawn...which turned blue after everyone had finished (so funny).

Enjoy!

I love Paris...even in the rain!

I Love Paris...Even In The Rain

At Fashionable Stamping Challenges this month we have the theme
of Winter In Paris!

Living nowhere near Europe, and with our seasons in Australia the opposite to those in Europe,
I had to really put my thinking cap on for this challenge.
I didn't even know whether it snows in Paris!
So, my thoughts went to what I thought Winter was ~ and any-which-way I looked at it I couldn't escape the rain!

So my piece for you this month has Wintry colours and rain.

The background uses purple and blue DI's on an acrylic block that was lightly spritzed with water.
Then placed onto some white card.
A little water flicking,
and a little bleach,
and voila, that was my background.

My writing is a little dodgy,
but I think it suits the card just the same.

Masking is one of my favourite things to do, it adds so much depth...so
the stamping is done using masking to create layers.
Then I also used masking of the inked area to stamp some drips...to add another couple of layers!

In the end, this is a monochromatic one-layer piece.
And, even with it's simplicity, it is one of my favourite makes for this year!

The girls at FSC have come up with some inspiring and very different versions on the theme this time.
Please pop on over and check out the awesomeness of their creativity,
be inspired, and maybe join in our fun.

I hope you enjoyed this as much as me.

Change of Season

Change of Season
is the new monthly challenge at Fashionable Stamping Challenges.

In my part of the world we have beautiful Spring weather starting to kick in with blue skies and new leaves bursting out on the trees.
And flowers....lots of flowers!!!
So for my piece this month I am inspired by what is around me.

I found this gorgeous paper from Bo Bunny in my stash with butterflies on it and thought it would make a perfect backing for my stamping.
I added some little circles which is a Finnabair stamp and stamped over some words from an old book...words that I thought represented Spring; spring, south, warm, sunshine, delight and birds.  These were coloured and added in among the other circles which were added with gesso.

Instead of using ink I have water-coloured the sunflower.

The girls at FSC have come up with some inspiring and very different versions on the theme this time.

Secret Squirrels

I've been having a little fun in the Craft Stamper's November issue with my card called
'Secret Squirrels'

It is in the Ready, Set, Stamp section with the theme of Woodlands.
It never ceases to amaze me how everyone can see the same topic so differently...

These stamps are all from Indigoblu and are heaps of fun when you combine them with a little masking, some drippage and, of course, some distress...

The squirrels running up and down the trees were an afterthought but somehow they just bring the whole quietness of a bare forest to life.

And we all know that there is no such thing as a silent forest!
There is always a little mischief going on...

Enjoy!

For My Sister

A Birthday Card
just for my sister.

I thought I would sit down and quickly ink up some card and make something for my sister....but the more I did, the more I wanted to add...you know how it goes!

Now my sister is always stirring me up in one way or another, so when I came up with the idea to stamp some circles onto a book page I couldn't resist stamping over some 'select' words, to stir her back...

I started with getting some ink onto the card using the swiping technique...with heaps of mustard seed re-inker (sooo much fun!)

Then, having some new Finnabair and Dina Wakly stamps, I thought it might be a good chance to play with them.

A little stenciling, some masking, a few splats of paint and some doodling...and there you have it!

And I have made a card that has "Happy Birthday" on it!

I hope you enjoy my card.
(and I hope my sister does too)

Words...at FSC

WORDS
is the new challenge at FSC this month.

When I look back over my work, I realise that 'words' are not something that I use a lot of.  Not that I am ever short of a word or two, I'm just not a "Happy Birthday" sort of person with my card creations.
However, for this challenge I have gone with a Tree Poem (by Stampendous) which I think suits this challenge perfectly.

haha...still no "Happy Birthday" :)

The background is made with Bister and I've splattered some H2O's and white paint for extra oomph.
The background is some 7 Dots paper that I had which I've inked up and stamped on before adding some leaves for that touch of Autumn.

I was at Paperific (papercraft show) in Melbourne recently and got to see a lot of products IRL...a change from the internet where a lot of my purchases are made. It was so good to see what size the stamps are!!! (I know, it's the little things).
I saw Flitterglu for the first time and couldn't resist buying some and using it on this card.

I also took a class with Limor Weber while I was at Paperific which was an incredible experience...she left me feeling very clever!
And I also met some wonderfully creative Australian people.
It would be great to catch up with them again one day!!!

I don't often work on canvas's, but Limor helped me face my fears of BIG spaces lol...I had so much fun and learnt heaps!!!

"Relaxing by the Sea"

Seaside or Beach
is our theme this month at Fashionable Stamping Challenges.

Living by the sea, there is always so much you can do: whether it is rugging up and walking the beaches in blustering winds (good for the legs) during Winter,  walking the dogs, coffee at beach cafes with friends while listening to local bands playing, rowing whaleboats, cruising around the harbour on yachts and relaxing with a wine, kids playing at the beach playground, watching the tuna boats come in and showing their haul for the day, or laying on your beach towel on a hot Summer's day and watching the surfers do their thing.
There is always so much going on!

So for this challenge I decided to get out my surfer stamp and show a relaxing scene.

To me, even though it is so busy sometimes down by the sea, what I like the most is the relaxing side of it, and I hope this is how this card makes you feel.
It is a surfer checking out the waves at the end of  Summer's day, as the sun sets over the ocean.  Deciding whether to go in just one more time.

The background was done with Archival re-inkers and highlighted with some distress inks.

All About the Men.

All About the Men
is the latest challenge at Fashionable Stamping Challenges.
We are now a monthly challenge blog, so we hope you have the time to join us.

When I saw this stamp from Brett Weldele it reminded me so much of my dad.  I think it has taken me about a year to actually give in and buy it.
Dad worked for the Portland Harbour Trust, helped build the silo's, worked on the wharves, was a diver and ended up on the tug boats.
I have so many wonderful memories as a kid; like trying on his diving gear, many hours down at the wharves checking out the boats and the most awesome xmas parties in the silo's themselves.
He was 'union' through-and-through (so probably explains a lot about me lol)

Anyway, this image reminds me of him so that is the inspiration for this card...

This is a large card, inspired by some new techniques that I learnt at a scrapbook workshop recently...
Isn't it funny how as card makers we sometimes find the scrapbooking size quite large, well, I found out that scrappers sometimes find it difficult to make cards - too small!  Go figure!!!

A close-up of some of the detail...

The medium used on this one is dylusions inks and water colours.

This pic shows some of the colouring with watercolours.
It turned out a little rustic and left me feeling like an artist...and I loved how it turned out!

"Getting Inky...Again"

Getting Inky...again!

I have been having so much fun with inky backgrounds lately!
This is a quick card that I made for a girlfriend's birthday.

It is a long weekend here and I am enjoying just having a play...I should be doing the commitment stuff, oh well...tomorrow!
Sometimes, you just have to play.

A few of my favourite things are part of putting this card together...
a good smidge of distress ink, a little dylusional stuff,
some butterflies and a little bleach.

A bit of blending here...
and little splatter there...
and voila!

One Stamp, Three Ways

One Stamp, Three Ways!

I am on holidays at the moment...and sat down for a little play with ink yesterday.

A week ago I was lucky enough to be a winner in a blog-hop with Stampendous and won some gorgeous goodies...
a stamp,
a stencil
and a sanding block!

Yesterday I wanted to have a play with my new stuff,
so I set myself a challenge while I was at it.
My challenge to myself was:
~ to use the stamp 3 ways
~ use green and yellow (as I don't use them very often)
~ and use circles (a common thread to tie the cards together)

Card 1

I used Bister background.

Card 2

With an Inky background.
I used Distress Inks for the background.

Card 3

And with lots of white space and a little doodling.
I used Dylusions for the colouring.

All very simple cards and all one layer.
Quick and easy, and heaps of fun!!!

Enjoy!

Have a Wonderful Day!

A quick and easy card!

Just a quick post today as I have the ladies coming over for a class and I really should be cleaning up instead on being on the computer lol!
But I couldn't resist sharing this quick and easy card with you.
I have been playing around with alcoholic inks again - just add
...a little stamping
...and a little splatter of paint
card done!

I hope everyone is keeping well in blogland
and I really do wish you all a wonderful day!

Just Scrappin'

Trying Something New
Yesterday I had the opportunity to go to a Scrap class
with the uber-talented Fiona Paltridge

Lots of ink, knowledge, laughter...and food!

We did a workshop on a class that she was invited to do
at the recent Brisbane Craft Fair in Australia.
I was definitely outside my comfort zone, being a card maker and working on spaces only a quarter the size of a scrap book page, but I learnt so much. Yep - I can now do a drip!!!

So I thought I would share what I made...

That's my son Jake ( a lot younger) who had no idea what I was up to.
You should have seen his face, his eyes lit up when he saw it and he loved it!  Phew!!!

I love a challenge! (understatement) And this was definitely outside my comfort zone.
And I had the best time ever!!!

Enjoy!

'That Summer Feeling'

That Summer Feeling...
To me Summer is all about the beach.

Lazy days ~ at the beach
Heat ~ so off to the beach to cool down.
Seashells ~ searching along the beach in little secluded coves.
And relaxing ~ at the beach...just watching the world go by.

aaahhh...now that is what Summer is all about!

This card was made for someone's special birthday who loves the beach too.

I hope you enjoy my card.

"You Are Always On My Mind"

"People"
Whether it is one person or many, this is the theme this fortnight at Fashionable Stamping Challenges.

A few weeks ago I went to my first ever craft retreat...OMG, how much fun are these to go to!  There were over 40 ladies in one large room crafting away without a care in the world...crafting until we dropped.
It is fair to say that I loved getting up and wandering over in my pj's and sitting down to craft, eat, craft, sleep, and craft all over again....
This is the card that I ended up with at the end of the first day.

Once again it uses some new background ideas that I picked up from Marjie Kemper's on-line Mixed Media class.
(yep - having a ball with thinking a little differently)

I have used a honey-comb stencil 3 ways - applying ink straight through the stencil; inking the stencil, spritzing water on it and 'stamping' with it; and 'stamping' using straight water on it.

Because there is a torn piece of paper on this, I have coloured the image on this with one of the colours from the background, and on the other half I have coloured with lifting the ink with water and also using a white gel pen.

It is a play-around card, but I liked how it turned out.

"Old Favourites"

"Old Favourites"
is the theme this fortnight at Fashionable Stamping Challenges.

So seek out, dust off and share the love of one of your
most favourite stamps that hasn't been used for awhile...
and join the fun!!!

For this card I chose my trusty, and long forgotten, three men stamp.
And my also little used and forgotten background stamp with the french script.

The three men were stamped onto book paper and cut out.
And the background is full of layers using lots and lots of ink, stencils and stamping (including the background stamp) before adding the men.

I have been doing an on-line course with Marjie Kemper, here,  because I think it is healthy to just refresh and gain new ideas...
plus it is a great thing to do when you have absolutely no way of actually getting to any of the workshops...
plus I looove the boldness of her colours with ink...

PLUS IT IS HEAPS OF FUN!!!

"Play It Loud!"

My baby turns 18 this month...
boy, how the time flies!!!

Seeing as how he loves to play the guitar...
VERY LOUD...
I wanted to make a card for him that suits his passion
and this is what I have come up with.
Lots of layers of distress inks helps!
I have been learning how to create even more depth with layers through Marjie Kemper's on-line classes, here...there is always something new to learn.

I have learnt...
to shut doors when it gets toooo loud...
to let him have his space...
to enjoy every minute of it...

Happy Birthday Scott!

sssh, this is him a couple of years ago playing on stage with a bass guitar at a school concert
- only 2 days practice at using the bass and he says "how hard can it be...it only has 4 strings"

Enjoy!

"Things With Wings"

Things With Wings
our the latest challenge at FSC this fortnight.

Oh my gosh...it was so difficult for me to settle into one idea for this challenge.
There were so many choices jumping into my mind, from dragonflies...to butterflies...to chooks...
and then I settles on birds ~ well one bird anyway!

This arch has been a favourite of mine for some time but I have never used it as a window before.  I have absolutely no idea why not because now it just seems like a real logical thing to do.

So then the background became a patchwork of bricks to create a wall to put the window in.
More logic.

To age the brick wall - as you do as arches are old things - I just worked the ink here and there and added a splatter stamp for extra effect (it's subtle, but it's there).

And of course there is ivy...because when things are old nature takes over...
more logic.

Then I wondered what to look at outside of the window and decided on this swallow and nest from TH...again, some of my favourite stamps.

In hindsight, maybe I should've put some eggs in the nest...oh well, next time!

"Lovey Dovey" at FSC

This fortnight we are all in LOVE!!!

That's right, we have the lovey-dovey thing going on at FSC.
This is open to animals in pairs, first love, bridal and romance...
whatever you interpret lovey dovey stuff to be.

For this challenge I have decided on a bridal card.
The idea that I had was to have a plain-ish style
but with some technique involved.
I think that wedding cards should be stylish and not over-done, but that's me...kind of classic (ummm, the card that is, not me lol)

For this card, the top layer is all in one layer.
Some of you may have heard of the 'out-of-the-box' technique,
well, this card is kind of the reverse
so I'm calling it the 'in-the-box' technique.

It uses a heart die behind which I have put some card that has been coloured with re-inkers (Wendy Vecchi style).

On the front I have stamped, coloured with Distress Inks and used stencils and negative stencilling (is that a technique???)

And, of course, there's a little doodling to finish it off!

The girls at FSC have come up with some inspiring and very different versions on the theme this time.

"Poor Teddie"

"Sew What"
It is all about the sewing at FSC this fortnight!

Those that know me, know that I am not into sewing...at all...
so this challenge stretched my imagination a little.
(which is always a good thing)

When I saw these teddy stamps and the whole thing fell into place.
These teddies look like 'well-loved' favourite toys
that just need a little tender care and some re-vamping
- and that is where the sewing comes into it!
It kind of reminds me of the gifts we are given to us when we are a baby that we hang onto forever...
the ones that we would never ever throw out...

The main panel is done in my all-time favourite techniques of
one-layer stamping and masking.
They just go together so naturally and give you that extra depth and dimension to your work.
Great for telling a story with your stamping!

A little distressing, a little bleach-blocking in the background (another favourite technique), and
a whole lot of love, make up this card.
well almost...I couldn't resist a little poking with a needle in the arm at the last minute...
(for mending purposes of course! lol)

The colours are done with worn lipstick and some vintage photo.

The girls at FSC have come up with some inspiring and very different versions on the theme this time.
Please pop on over and check out the awesomeness of the fashionettes,
